Pictured are two sets of steam sterilizable in-place acid and base vessels for pH control and antifoam vessels for foam control, (antifoam being the largest). These were sized for the two 1,200 liter fermenters. They each have magnetically coupled agitation that is remotely activated. The agitators are mounted in ceramic bushings (bearings) to withstand the corrosive environment of acid or base at >121 oC sterilization temperatures (195, 196, 199).
In the foreground, (colored green), are two air compressors, one used with the other waiting as backup. Their use schedule is alternated. Each is capable of providing double the volume of air to all five fermenters per minute at 70 psi pressure. In the background are two chillers (colored blue) for fermenter cool-down at the end of the run and for refrigeration of the raw and semi-processed broth in the Product Recovery Areas.
To the right are power control panels for each fermenter drive system and plumbing panel, as well as Product Recovery Area refrigeration units, agitators, hydraulic pumps, centrifugal pumps, centrifuges, filter press, Podbielniak liquid-liquid contactor, crystallizer, ion exchange columns, blowers and heaters (136, 195, 196).
